Church Engagement. Churches in South Africa are the best-positioned, most widely-dispersed social agencies available to address the broad range of HIV/AIDS issues. The Church Engagement Focus Area is networking Orlando East Pastors and equipping them to: 1) speak authoritatively on medical, social and spiritual aspects of HIV/AIDS; 2) deal with sensitive issues such as testing, treatment and stigma; 3) develop a multi-tiered church strategy that addresses prevention, treatment and care; and 4) move to the forefront of HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in the community. Job Creation. Creation of jobs is a key focus of the SAHAC initiative because the high level of unemployment and resulting poverty among young people is a significant contributor to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Job Creation Focus Area is: 1) promoting the creation and expansion of profitable, growing and sustainable businesses that generate economic turnover in the community; 2) linking these businesses with existing large businesses in the region to provide accelerated growth; and 3) channeling young people into these businesses as entrepreneurs or employees according their skills and passions. Community Health. The Community Health Focus Area is implementing the Community Health Evangelism strategy, an approach developed and validated by SAHAC Partner Organization LifeWind International. The process trains an expanding network of community volunteers as Community Health Evangelists (CHEs) who regularly visit 10-15 neighboring households, promoting principles of disease prevention, healthy living and moral/spiritual values.
